Children's Specialized Hospital is one of the largest pediatric healthcare rehabilitation systems in the United States and is among the preeminent providers of rehabilitation for children with special needs. Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Spinal Cord Injury: Promoting Health and Preventing Complications through Exercise
This project systematically and comprehensively addresses the role and impact of physical activity in the prevention of secondary conditions in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Initially, the project establishes critical, yet-undefined physiological responses to exercise in SCI and comprehensively examines cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with SCI applying accepted guidelines used in the able-bodied population. The project develops exercise formats specifically designed according to severity of SCI and chronicity of SCI to address the prevention of and knowledge regarding osteoporosis and other secondary conditions. In addition, the project determines whether regular exercise is related to fewer secondary conditions. Whirlwind Wheelchair International
Whirlwind Wheelchair International (WWI), a program of the Urban Institute at San Francisco State University (SFSU), works to make wheelchairs available to every person in the developing world who needs one. It does this by designing wheelchairs that could be built in developing countries from locally available materials, and by providing on-site training in wheelchair assembly, production, and fitting, to support small shop production in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. All of WWI’s designs are placed in the public domain in order not to add to the cost of village wheelchair shops using these designs. Wanted: People with Disabilities to Discuss Emergency Preparedness

The American Red Cross is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and ORC Macro to develop educational materials on terrorism and emergency preparedness for people with disabilities. As part of this project, people with disabilities are invited to take part in on-line focus groups to discuss how emergency preparedness information may best address specific experiences and concerns. The eight focus groups will take place between June 27 and July 6. Each person who takes part in a group will receive $50.00.The educational materials will cover five major preparedness topics, including mass evacuation and evacuation planning for people with disabilities and their caregivers; emergency water and food supplies; shelter-in-place during chemical or radiation emergency; quarantine and isolation; and maintaining a healthy state of mind.
Each focus group will consist of people in one of the following groups:
- people with severe hearing impairments (June 27 and July 6)
- caretakers of adults with severe cognitive disabilities (June 27 and July 6)
- people with severe vision impairments (June 26 and June 29)
- people with severe mobility disabilities (June 26 and June 29).
All focus participants must be 18 years of age or older.
The focus groups are being conducted over the Internet – you can participate from home, from work, or any place you have access to the Web. You will need a computer with a high-speed Internet connection over which you can receive and respond to questions from a moderator. People with visual disabilities, people with mobility disabilities and caregivers will need to be able to connect to the Internet and make a phone call at the same time because during part of the discussions, participants will interact with the moderator and the group by phone as well as by Internet. Focus groups with people with hearing disabilities will be on-line only. Each focus group will last approximately 90 minutes. Approximately 6 people will participate in each focus group.

For a limited time, a new Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Health Education Multimedia Series is available free of charge. This set of five programs can be used as a stand-alone product or be modified for personal use. Each program is a series of PowerPoint slide presentations that can be accessed in a variety of ways: The programs can be viewed on a computer using a web browser, downloaded from the Web, or the complete set can be ordered on CD-ROM. Vocare Bladder System

The Food and Drug Administration has approved for marketing the Vocare Bladder System, an implanted device that restores bladder function to people with spinal cord injury. Manufactured by NeuroControl Corp. of Cleveland, Ohio, the system allows people with complete spinal cord injury to empty their bladders without using catheters, medications or other adaptive equipment. According to Reuters Health, the system contains a pacemaker-type stimulator that sends electrical signals through electrodes to the spinal nerves leading to the bladder. The signals cause the muscles of the bladder and urethral sphincter to contract, and then relaxation of the sphincter enables the bladder to empty.
