    The Dialect MMX-3 Dedicated Speech Generating Device is a direct selection and scanning communicator designed for use by individuals with communication or speech disabilities. This portable device is available pre-loaded with a choice of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) software packages and speech synthesizers. Available packages include The Grid 2, Acapela Speech Synthesizer, Symbolstix Communication symbols and Widgit Symbols ; Windbag 3 and Acapela Speech Synthesizer; Mind Express, RealSpeak and Symbolstix symbols; Speaking Dynamically Pro/BoardMaster, SAPI Speech Synthesizer and PCS symbols; or Tobii ATI Communicator, Acapela Speech Synthesizer, and SymbolStix Communication symbols. This communication aid allows the user to create up to 142 minutes of digital voice recordings and play back the messages. Messages can range from single words to sentences and paragraphs. The device has a touch panel with adjustable sensitivity to accommodate different motor needs. It is also possible to transfer and copy messages and functions from one key to another, without re-recording or re-programming them. Voice messages can be saved by copying them to a floppy disk using an optional disk drive. Thus, a library of messages can be built for the user to accommodate different situations. The device's built-in electronic display provides step-by-step instructions and guidance during the programming process. It also allows the user to review and edit previously programmed sequences. Messages can also be lengthened on any key without having to re-program the entire level. The device comes with a set of 18 overlays, some pre-printed and some blank. Layouts vary from 1 x 2 (2 keys) to 4 x 12 (48 keys). The blank overlays can be copied and customized with any combination of symbols, letters, or handwritten messages.     EasyTalk, models 8, 16, 24 and 32, is a direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with communication disabilities. This communication aid can record up to 56 minutes of digitized voice messages on eight recording levels. Users can access messages stored at any level using one or two switches. There are four scanning options: Row/Column, Linear, Vertical and Horizontal. Each key can record a message of any length, limited only by available memory. The touch panel can accommodate 4 by 10, 4 by 5, 2 by 5, 2 by 2, 1 by 2, and 1 by 1 overlays (key layouts). The touch panel's sensitivity can be adjusted to accommodate different motor needs. The device has an alarm that can call for help when any key is held five seconds longer than the hold time. This handheld device resembles a small tablet computer. It features a bright poly-silicon (LTPS) 800 x 600 touch screen that can be read in a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. The e-Talk 8400 also has a built-in microphone and an internal speaker with variable volume, and there is a sound output port for use with external speaker(s). It uses PCS symbols than can be used singly for one-button cause and effect, in pairs two cell simple choice, or multiple symbols can be associated to create phrases and sentences. This communicator uses the e-Talk 1.5 software with DECtalk speech that facilitates the creation of new pages, variation of the number of buttons on a page, location of specific symbols, and customization of colors and spacing. Clinicians and therapists can also create page sets entirely on a computer and download vocabulary to the user’s eTalk-8400. In addition to the touch screen, the user can utilize any USB input device (including USB keyboards), certain switches or the customizable on-screen keyboard to select cells illustrated by individual or combined symbols, pictures, or text, or by spoken sounds; to spell words; to choose phrases; and to write sentences in order to produce voice output. The GTA and GTN also have a built-in microphone and an internal speaker with variable volume, and there are microphone input and sound output ports for use with external speaker(s) or an external microphone. Both models come with Saltillo Chat software and SymbolStix symbols standard. Pictures can also be imported from computers for use as symbols. The communicators use the Saltillo software with Acapela (GTA) or Neo Speech (GTN) speech that facilitates symbol- and/or text-based communication, the creation of new pages and vocabulary, variation of the number of buttons on a page, location of specific symbols, and customization of colors and spacing. Clinicians and therapists can also create page sets entirely on a computer and download vocabulary to the user’s e-Talk GTA or GTN.     The GEWA Control Prog is a remote controller for an environmental control system designed for use by individuals with mobility disabilities, severe physical disabilities, or spinal cord injury. This hand-held infrared transmitter can learn channels from other remote controls such as TV and video or function within the GEWA Infra-Link system using either direct selection or scanning. This 15-level programmable transmitter can send 241 signals to control environmental devices, including security-coded devices such as apartment or house doors, and X-10 remote control devices for lighting and appliances. Level 10 is pre-programmed to send commands to a personal computer (PC). For this function a 6632 Access USB Interface is required but not included. One or several buttons can be adapted to coding; choose between 4096 different codes, e.g. for door locking procedures. There are options to create sequences (macros) so that one button press can send multiple signals. The transmitter does not need to be aimed at the receivers and can be used from as far away as 100 feet, within a line of sight. For those who cannot operate the transmitter by hand, it can be actuated by any single-function control such as a sip or puff switch, head actuated switch, or hand or foot switch.     The GEWA FTB 108 is an enlarged keyboard for personal computers. The keyboard has 108 keys which can be used with a low amount of force; the enlarged keys corresponds to the standard keyboard keys. The keys are recessed so that they can not be pressed unintentionally. Operation delay and repetition rate functions can be set to limit the number of wrong keystrokes. A "keep-function" allows one-finger typists to activate the CRTL and ALT keys one at a time rather than simultaneously. A built-in clamp attaches the Page Turner to support item, and unit can be tilted for bed reading. A rubber roller manipulates pages forward and backward, singly or continuously, with no adjustments necessary for size, texture or style of document.     The Head Pointers use the chin rather than the forehead as a point of reference for the pointer. They have a soft tip for use with tablet computers, smart phones or other touchscreen devices. This system provides an immediate, independent communication link in case of an emergency. The system includes a universal infrared transmitter, a remote-controlled speaker-telephone, and an alternating current (AC) wall outlet. The transmitter and a sip-or-puff switch are attached to an I-V stand and can be moved aside or from room to room. Other components can be added for environmental control, including door openers and locks, lights, call-alarms, window openers and powered draperies, elevators, telephone, TV, radio, VCR, lamps, alarms, and electric-bed functions.

    JoyBox is a switch input adaptor designed for use by individuals who use switches. This device enables the user to play arcade-style games or operate a mouse with up to eight switches. This USB switch box works with most switch software, including Writing with Symbols, Clicker 4, and The Grid from Sensory Software (see entries). When this plug-and-play device is connected to the USB port on a personal computer (PC), it is recognized by Microsoft Windows as a Game Controller or Joystick without installation of special software. Switches connected to any of the eight numbered connectors activate the fire buttons. Switches connected to the four direction connectors will "move" the joystick. The device can also enable switch operation of the mouse using the included Joystick to Mouse software.

  27. JOYCABLE

    JoyCable is a switch input interface designed for use by individuals who use switches. This device enables the user to play arcade-style games such as Midtown Madness or Motocross Madness with two switches (for example, a pair of head switches). This USB switch box works with most switch software, including Writing with Symbols, Clicker 4, and The Grid from Sensory Software (see entry). When this plug- and-play device is connected to the USB port on a personal computer (PC), it is recognized by Microsoft Windows as a game controller or joystick, without installation of special software.     The Switch Radio-Link is a switch interface unit designed for use by individuals with severe physical disabilities or spinal cord injury. This interface allows wireless connection of switches to computers, communication aids, toys, environmental controls, and other devices. The interface enables switches to be operated from anywhere within 12 feet, even through obstacles such as people and furniture. It works with all personal computer (PC) switch software that uses a standard switch interface, including Writing with Symbols, Clicker, and Sensory Software Programs (see entries). The system includes two transmitters for connecting to switches, and a receiver for connecting to the computer or other controlled device. Each of the transmitters has a 3.5-millimeter jack. The receiver is connected either to the RS232 serial port of the computer or the sockets of an existing switch adapter. Each set of transmitter and receivers has a unique code, printed on the receiver, so multiple interfaces can be used in the same room without interference. They are also resistant to interference from other radio emitters such as mobile phones and computers. There are three versions: A Universal version that connects to devices via two cables with 3.5-millimeter plugs, recommended for communication aids, environmental controls, and toys; and USB and Serial versions, recommended for computer applications. The communicator has four levels, which all use the same key pattern. Up to 45 minutes of messages can be recorded, with no restriction on message length per key. The messages are selected and spoken when the user selects a key either by pressing it directly, or by using a switch with scanning. The messages are usually represented with a paper overlay, which may display pictures, photos, graphics, or words. Available key layouts are 4 x 8, 2 x 1, 4 x 1, 2 x 2, 2 x 4, 4 x 4, or single key.     Toy Adapter Cables allow battery operated toys or devices to be turned on using most single switches (switches not included). The plate is inserted between two batteries in a battery-operated device, such as a toy, or between a battery and a battery contact. This text-to-speech device enables any message typed on the keyboard and shown on the display to be read out clearly in a high-quality, natural sounding male or female voice. These digitized sounds can be used to attract attention, animate a conversation, orfor playback of a human voice or as a WAV or MP3 player. The synthesized voice (Realspeak) is available in different languages. The unit can change languages with a few keystrokes to accommodate multi-lingual settings. The text-to-speech capabilities are further enhanced by an intelligent word prediction system. A character keyed in will generate a predicted list of words that begin with that character. Word prediction can be further refined by the input of additional characters. When a complete word has been typed or inserted, the Allora predicts the next word using its knowledge of word pairs. The unit can also recall pre-stored messages. Commonly used phrases can be programmed under any key, and more than 100 messages can be stored. Abbreviation expansion can be used to display a whole message with just a few keystrokes. This communicator also has built-in scanning with no extra display required. When a standard switch is plugged in, pressing it will cause scanning to begin automatically. The row-column alphabet also takes advantage of word prediction. The unit features a waterproof keyboard with standard sized, easy-to-push, tactile keys. The liquid crystal (LCD) display consists of two lines with 40 characters each. Bundled with the unit is AltraPoint software which enables one-click shortcuts with the three buttons. The software also turns the four corners of the computer screen into instant access control points and provides the ability to work pixel by pixel.     The PapooTouch is a handheld direction selection and symbolic communicator designed for people with communication and speech disabilities. This communicator also functions as an MP3 and digital video player. The PapooTouch features a 4.3-inch touchscreen (480 x 272 pixels) with 16 million colors. It is usable with one or two hands. The user can use either the on-screen keyboard or symbol grids to form phrases and sentences that are spoken by the PapooTouch. Grids can include pictures provided by the user and Widgit symbols, and the user can create grids on a computer and upload them to the PapooTouch via a USB connection. The PapooTouch features two built-in speakers with high-quality vocal synthesis of male or female voices. It supports English, French, Spanish, German and Italian.     The Voice Switch is a sound-based control switch designed for use by individuals with neurological or severe physical disabilities, and a sound production training device designed for use by individuals with speech disabilities. This device provides a switch closure to control connected assistive technology in response to sound production, and it can be used to train sound production capability by persons with speech disabilities, including persons who have limited ability to produce sounds with the larynx or voice box because of cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, brainstem stroke, or nerve damage due to injury or surgery. The device comes in a plastic case and all controls are on the front panel, while the input and output ports are located on the top panel. It is equipped with a removable belt clip.The unit contains software that analyzes an incoming sound to determine if it is human speech. The switch can be set up by the user to only accept speech sounds, or to accept any sound (including speech sounds) that meets the input requirements. Two knobs on the top panel enable the user to set the sound duration and volume required to activate the output relay. The third knob adjusts the volume of the auditory feedback to the user indicating that a sound has met the input requirements. The output relay is activated for 0.1 second (100 milliseconds).
