This 19-ring binder is made of heavy-duty board covered with water-resistant imitation leather.     1-Foot Braille Rulers are tactile rulers designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. There are two versions: An English Measurement Ruler, model 1-03070-00, and a Metric-English Measurement Ruler, model 1-03100-00. Both rulers are made of molded plastic. On the English Measurement Ruler, inches and fractions are indicated by raised lines. Braille figures are located at inch divisions. On the Metric-English Measurement Ruler, one-centimeter and 1/2 centimeter intervals are indicated by raised lines, opposite English-measurement scale. Braille numbers identify 2-centimeter increments. OPTIONS: A caliper slide, model 1-03090-00, is available for accurate measurement.     "Abacus Basic Competency: A Counting Method," by Susan M. Millaway, is an instructional manual designed for teaching skills in performing the four basic math operations on the abacus to children and adults who are blind or have low vision. It comes in a large print edition, model 7-00219-00, and a braille edition, model 5-00219-00. The braille edition is 102 pages. This manual employs both instruction and exercises to teach abacus skills, using the Counting Method rather than traditional indirect methods. Advantages of the Counting Method include its comparability to the way sighted children learn to count and add, and the simplicity of its rules.

  6. ABC'S OF BRAILLE (MODEL 5-00200-00)

    ABCs of Braille, by Bernard Krebs, model 5-00200-00, is a manual for teaching braille designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This braille textbook provides a simplified introduction to the characters and rules of English braille. The plan and layout of instructional materials are designed to assist both the teacher and the student.

  7. AIDS FOR TEACHING BASIC CONCEPTS OF SENSORY DEVELOPMENT (MODEL 7-02250-00)

    Aids for Teaching Basic Concepts of Sensory Development, model 7-02250-00), is a handbook containing perceptual training activities for children who are blind or have low vision or multiple disabilities. This print handbook discusses sensory development concepts, and provides guidance for professionals on perceptual training activities. Hand skills are one of its principal topics. Introduced are various shapes and sizes: small, medium and large circle, similiar and different triangles, containers which hold various small items which produce different sounds when shaken. There also is information about how to build the appropriate item under discussion along with a one page summary of the purpose for which the item is constructed.

    Aluminum, 0.005 inches thick and sprayed on one side with an off white flat paint which will readily accept drawings made by pencil or ink.     The Analog Clock Model, model 5-82700-00, is a teaching clock designed for use in teaching time concepts to children who are blind or have low vision. This teaching clock has braille and raised large print markings on its face, its hands are easily rotated, and the minute and hour hands are synchronized like those of an actual, functioning clock.

    The APH Number Line Device is a tactile aid for math designed for use by students who are blind or have low vision. It has ten interchangeable vinyl line segments with black raised lines and dots at intervals. Forty plastic cylinders serve as pegs and/or interlocking bars. Numerals are in braille and print.     The APH Signature Guide, model 1-03530-00, is an aluminum signature guide designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This guide aids people who are visually impaired in writing their signatures. The aluminum frame has an opening with an elastic band; the band provides a guide for writing and flexes to allow for the descenders of letters. The frame also has a rubber backing to prevent slipping. DIMENSIONS (LxW): 4.5 x 2.25 inches with a window of 3.5 x 1 inches.

    The APH SoundPage, model 6-77505-00, is a digital recorder designed for use by children who are blind or have low vision. This recording device can provide sound effects, music, or messages to accompany storybook text for young readers. The basic set includes two digital recording devices and a thermoformed plastic page slotted to hold up to three devices. The plastic page fits into the 3-ring binder of any On The Way to Literacy storybook (see separate entry). Each device is able to record, store, and play back an eight-second message, sound clip, or sound effect. The child and teacher or parent can create their own sound-effect scheme, deciding on what effects would best augment the story and when they should be played. The scheme might call for a sound to be used at a specific point or throughout the story. The included User's Guide contains suggestions for using the device as a part of story reading and suggests other uses it at home or in the preschool classroom.     APHont is a low vision font designed for use by readers with low vision. It embodies characteristics that have been shown to enhance reading speed, comprehension, and comfort for large print users. The APHont Suite consists of Regular, Bold, Italic, and Italic Bold fonts. Features include more even spacing between letters; higher crossbars; no serifs; wider letters; heavier letters; underslung "j" and "q"; more open letters; and larger punctuation marks.

  19. APPLE IIGS OWNER'S GUIDE: DISK EDITION

    The Apple IIGS Owner's Guide: Disk Edition is an ASCII text version of Apple Computer, Inc.'s Apple IIGS Owner's Guide on a single disk for individuals who are blind or have low vision. The disk contains a manual-reading program, permitting the user to read the entire guide with a speech synthesizer. The user may also print a large type or Braille copy of the text. Information on the about the Apple IIGS includes: setting up the machine and booting up the system; formatting disks and using application programs; and saving, printing and editing files, etc. For speech output, Textalker text to speech software is included on the disk. The program comes on a 3.5 inch disk with start-up sheets in large type and Braille. COMPATIBILITY: For use on Apple IIGS computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Requires Apple IIe, IIc, IIc+ or IIGS computer with at least 128K RAM and a 3.5 inch disk drive. For voice output, a speech synthesizer is required.

    Armadillo Army is an educational game program and visual training activity designed for use by children who are blind or have low vision. This educational maze game helps students who are visually impaired practice necessary skills such as lateral eye movements, vertical eye movements, searching skills, timing skills, visual discrimination skills, peripheral detection skills, eccentric viewing skills, and eye-hand coordination. The arcade-style game has bright, large graphics for players with low vision, along with meaningful and directive sound elements that give blind players the opportunity to practice listening and discrimination skills. The game takes place in a maze, where Tex, a humanoid with a ten-gallon hat, gains points by gathering up cactus jelly, jewels, and jalapeno peppers while keeping away from blue armadillos which roll at random throughout the maze. When Tex gets enough points, he accumulates power with which he can send out a zapping ray from his finger to zap armadillos and make them disappear. As the player reaches higher levels of difficulty, he/she must also avoid a Texas tornado which threatens to gather up all the goodies as well as Tex. If Tex gets through all nine levels, he wins. The game can be played by a single player or two players. The game program is available on CD-ROM (model D-03400-00) or through electronic distribution (model D-03400-ED). COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM and compatible computers.     The Art History Through Touch and Sound Series is a series of multimedia textbooks designed to teach art appreciation and art history to individuals who are blind or have low vision. Each title in the series includes a Diagram Manual with printed images of artworks and corresponding tactile representations; cassette tapes that guide users through the tactile diagrams; and an accessible Teacher's Supplement on a personal computer (PC)-formatted floppy disk, containing the text of the audio narrative, art appreciation activities, and guidelines for incorporating art into the core curriculum. Titles in the series include The Building Blocks of Art, model 1-09003-00; The Art of Ancient Egypt, model 1-09002-00; African Art, model 1-09004-00; and European Modernism: 1900-1940, model 1-09001-00. OPTIONS: A braille version of the Teacher's Supplement is available separately.

    Basic Map Reading Concepts: Map Study II, model 1-01120-00, is map skills training designed for use by students who are blind or have low vision. This training program presents 30 map reading concepts in three areas: location and direction; finding corners; and diagonal, vertical, and horizontal movement. This program includes 13 sequential lesson plans in print, and three plastic relief maps with contrasting colors designed to introduce area, linear, and point symbols.

    The Basic Tactile Anatomy Atlas, model 1-08845-00, is a tactile graphics set for anatomy designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This two-volume set of thermoformed graphics provides a comprehensive overview of the human body. It features illustrations of major groups and systems, including the skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. The thermoforms have braille and print labels and brief braille descriptions. An instruction manual in regular print is included. OPTIONS: A replacement instructional manual is available separately.

    The Beginner's Abacus, model 1-03180-00, is an abacus designed for use by students who are blind or have low vision. This abacus is a counting frame that helps reinforce beginning mathematical concepts such as one-to-one correspondence, counting, place value, addition, and subtraction. It also introduces basic abacus terms such as "set" and "clear." It consists of a rectangular frame with felt backing and two rods, with nine large beads sliding on each rod. This abacus comes with a print manual. OPTIONS: Print and braille editions of the manual are available separately. COLOR: The frame is black, the felt backing is dark red, and the beads are white.

  25. BEGINNER'S WRITING PAPER

    White, 50-pound, standard finish paper is printed with black ink on 8 1/ 2 by 11 inch sheets. Paper is padded and comes in packages of approximately 100 pages. Assists in the instruction of manuscript and cursive writing.     The Book Port Plus is a digital talking book player and MP3 player designed for use by individuals with blindness or low vision. This small device incorporates an audio book player, an accessible MP3 player, a clockand a voice recorder and player in one unit. The Book Port Plus contains a Wi-Fi chip, USB port, SD card port (up to 32 gigabytes [GB]), stereo microphone and headphone jacks, and a built-in speaker and microphone. One SD card is included. The USB can be used to connect to a computer to manage content; a CD with the Book Transfer software, documentation and a free book is included. This product can read digital talking books from National Library Service (NLS), including both downloaded titles and titles sent in the mail on a cartridge; digital talking books from Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) (downloaded from their website or ordered on CD); digital talking books from Bookshare.org; audio books from Audible.com; text-based books downloaded from various websites; or books scanned by the user with optical character recognition software. The unit must be authorized through RFB&D or NLS to play recordings from these organizations, and the user must have an account to use Bookshare.org. The Book Port Plus supports a variety of file formats, including Word, text, and HTML as well as Daisy, including 2.x and 3.x audio and text formats. The Wi-Fi capability also allows the user to play internet radio or download podcasts. Ear buds, short and long USB cables, and a carrying pouch are also included. It supports all the media types covered by the DAISY (Digital Audio Information System) Consortium's Digital Talking Book 3.0 specifications, including audio only, text only, and synchronized text and audio. The program can be used to create digital talking books in DAISY 3.0 format, and it provides full reading, control, and navigation capabilities for DAISY 2.02 talking books, although it does not support creating DAISY 2.02 books. The program is available on CD-ROM (model D-03531-00) or through electronic distribution (model D-03531-ED). COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM compatible computers. These clear, blank self-adhesive labels can be brailled and used to label items around the home, school, and office. The labels come in a variety of packages and sizes. Pre-cut, peel-off labels that accommodate braille lines 15 cells wide come in two sizes, Large and Small. Two lines fit on the small labels and four lines fit on the large labels. The Small Label Pack (model 1-08872--00) includes 10 sheets with 18 labels per sheet. The Large Label Pack (model 1-08873-00) includes 10 sheets with 10 labels per sheet. Full-Size and Pin-Fed Sheets offer more room for brailling and can be cut to the desired size. A printed SimBraille sheet is included with each package to assist in determining size and placement. This 180- degree half circle protractor has bold large type numbers and braille dots to mark the degrees. Two braille dots mark ten-degree increments, while a single braille dot marks the five-degree increments. This protractor features a "wand," a long, flat piece which is pointed at one end and anchored on a pivot at the center of the protractor. When the pointed end of the wand is aligned with a certain degree measurement, the corresponding angle is created by the wand and the bottom edge of the protractor. Print and braille instructions are included.

This assessment is an individually administered test to determine the student's skills in applying knowledge of reading and arithmetic in a variety of real-life situations. Reading and arithmetic tasks on this test relate to everyday activities, such as understanding labels on drug containers, following directions in a recipe, budgeting monthly expenses, and making price comparisons. While the regular print version requires approximately 15 to 25 minutes to administer, the large print version will usually require 30 to 60 minutes administration time. The braille test package includes a regular print version of the K-FAST Manual, a supply of individual test records, an Administrator's Manual in braille, and two easel style test booklets.

They are inexpensive and consumable, so teachers can mark them appropriately for the lessons of the day. There are ten different types of maps printed in black ink on nonglare antique ivory paper. One map is of the 48 continguous states with border regions of Mexico and Canada. Another map is an overview map which depicts all of North America including Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, the continental U.S., Mexico, the West Indies and the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The other maps are regional sections of the United States broken into Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii. Each letter of the alphabet has two pages. The first page features a jumbo braille cell, with six raised-line open circles. The upper and lower case letters are shown with their braille equivalents, along with a reduced-size cell showing which dots need to be filled in to complete the letter. The second page shows the letter and a tactile graphic depiction of an easy-to-find object that begins with that letter. The object is depicted in a tactile graphic format, enabling the student to color it in. Attached to the inside front cover is a plastic stencil of the jumbo cell. This can be folded over the blank pages, allowing the student to practice the braille cell configuration for that letter by tracing or by using the accompanying foam braille chips. This bank account management software package provides printing and braille embossing of the check register, and enables writing checks in a variety of sizes and styles. The CD version (D-03560-00) comes with Enhanced Voicing speech. The electronic download version (D-03560-ED) has the same features as the CD version, except it is not supplied with Enhanced Voicing. However, the program can still be used with any other SAPI 5-compliant speech engine. The program includes a spoken, on-screen check register for recording all details of bank transactions and supports for multiple accounts. Cleared and running balances are spoken with a keystroke. The built-in speech can be turned off in order to use a screen reader instead. Font type and size are adjustable. The user can select and arrange register columns. Bank transaction information can be imported when downloaded in Quicken Interchange Format (QIF). The program provides a simple method for reconciling the user register with information from the bank. These tactile storybooks contain information and activities to enhance the development of literacy in young children. Giggly-Wiggly, Snickety-Snick has words on the left-hand page that capture a range of tactile experiences such as bumpy, smooth, and crunchy, and envelopes on the right-hand pages that can be filled with the corresponding real objects (not included). Something Special is a story about a child who has lost something, featuring objects fixed to the book pages. That's Not My Bear is a story about a child who has lost his teddy bear, featuring fuzzy shapes for the special bear and for the replacements offered by his family. Geraldine's Blanket is a story about a girl's special blanket and how it wears out over time, with squares of fabric affixed to the pages to show the fate of the blanket. Jennifer's Messes features thermoforms (molded plastic shapes) of familiar objects such as breakfast cereals, pretzels, and crayons, illustrating the messes made by Jennifer. Jellybean Jungle is a counting book with rows of one to ten thermoform jellybeans; it comes with scented stickers that can be affixed to the jellybeans. The student counts the tactile symbols and then reads the correct braille number. The raised-line symbols are embossed only; the number answers are in large print and braille. Cards can be subdivided into smaller groups with the raised-line symbols arranged to match the student's skill level.

Each math game consists of a plastic packet that holds fifty cards in braille and large print. A math question and four possible answers are on the front and back of each card. The plastic packet has four holes on its edge corresponding to the four possible answers. The student places a tool into the hole corresponding to the selected answer. If the answer is correct, the card will slide out of the packet; otherwise the student must select a new answer.

The kit includes a large print guidebook that describes activities to teach basic concepts related to animal life, and visual and tactile overlays designed to be used with a light box (not included) or as stand-alone materials. The program includes a large print guidebook with activities to teach basic plant concepts; colorful, raised-line overlays for use with a light box (not included), showing a bean seed cross-section, flowers, leaves, trees, etc.; and two trays designed to fit under a light box ledge to provide a secure working area for the overlays.     Speaqualizer is a hardware-based system that provides voice output of information appearing on the computer screen of IBM PC or PS/2 Model 30/286 computers. The Speaqualizer is "transparent," providing voice output for any software that sends character data to the screen and uses the operating system cursor. The Speaqualizer system consists of three parts: an internal circuit card for the computer, a control box, and a connecting cable. A keyboard on the control box is used to control what section of the screen will be read back and how it will be read. The user can adjust the speed and volume of the synthesized speech at any time, even while the Speaqualizer is talking. The user can also silence the speech at any time. Tactile markings include a thick raised line to denote the equator; dashed raised lines for the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capicorn; a solid raised line for the Prime Meridian; and a dashed line for the International Date Line.     Tools for Selecting Appropriate Learning Media is a manual designed for use in the evaluation of the braille reading readiness of students who are blind or have low vision. The three tactile volumes come with an instructional booklet in regular print.

  204. TYPEWRITING FOR BLIND STUDENTS: TEACHER KIT (MODEL 1-08880-00) & STUDENT KIT (MODEL 1-08970-00)

    Typewriting for Blind Students is a recorded typing instruction program designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This instructional program is recorded on four-track cassettes that run at 15/16 inches per second (ips). The lessons teach typewriter keyboard fingering and help students develop speed and accuracy. The Student Kit, model 00-08970-00, has lessons designed for students working at their own rate, while the Teacher Kit, model 1-08880-00, also has lessons designed for classrom use. The Teacher Kit includes a teacher's manual, five cassettes with ten classroom lessons, and nine cassettes with skill-building lessons for individual work. The Student Kit includes the nine cassettes with skill-building lessons found in the Teacher's kit.

Presented for the beginning user, it has minimal technical vocabulary, gives extensive descriptions of graphical components and general XP functionality, and emphasizes keyboard and keyboard shortcut use. In the game, children play as spiders trying to capture insects in a web. When the last insect on the game board has been captured, the spider having the greatest number of prey or value of prey in its lunch tray is the "Master of the Web." As players navigate their hungry spiders through an insect-laden web, they learn to trace various raised lines that make up the web; identify point symbols on the spider tokens; and discriminate the textures and shapes of various prey. Other concepts and skills developed include visual and tactual scanning, directionality, one-to-one correspondence, turn taking, counting, reading, sorting/organizing, problem solving, strategic planning, interpreting legends/keys, symbolic understanding, and following directions. The game includes a glow-in-the-dark game board, three-dimensional spider tokens, basic shape prey, textured shape prey, advantage and obstacle cards, lunch trays for captured insects, card holder, and tactile dice.

About the size of a remote control, the device has a detector on one end that senses color, a built-in speaker, and three operations buttons. Depending on the settings selected, the device will announce the universal color name, the common color name, conventional color-analysis (hue, brightness, saturation), or special color-analysis (red, green, blue content). Other features include a talking clock, calendar, timer, thermometer, and three games (dice, roulette, and bingo); an earphone jack (earphones not included); and jacks to accommodate a neck loop. The device comes with a carrying case and instructions in print, braille, and on cassette. Languages available include English (model 1-03951-00) and Spanish (model 1-03951-SP). Headphones provide audio feedback, which changes in pitch to indicate the distance to the object being scanned. The device has two range modes: long range (about 16 feet) and short range (about 6 feet). The device comes with headphones and and instructional audiotape with sample sounds.     The Listening Post III is a headset adapter designed for use with a variety of sound sources, including cassette players and recorders and digital recorders, used by people who are blind or have low vision. The device is equipped with four 3.5 mm jacks with a separate volume control for each jack. It also includes a mono/stereo selector switch that eliminates the need for stereo to mono adaptor plugs. The adapter comes with two 3-foot cords and can be used with either mono or stereo headphones.

    The LumiTest is a light probe designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This device emits a tone that increases in pitch as light is approached, and when it is in direct contact with materials, lighter colors are indicated by a higher-pitched tone. It can be used to tell whether lights are on, to locate a light source in a room, to tell whether an LED is solid or flashing, to determine whether a page has print on it, or to find the blank space on a letter to write a signature.     Miniguide US is a vibrating and audible electronic mobility aid designed for use by individuals who are blind or deaf blind or have low vision. This hand-held electronic travel device uses ultrasound to detect objects, and gives tactual or auditory feedback by vibrating or chirping more rapidly as the user approaches an object. The device can help a blind person avoid obstacles and overhangs, locate landmarks or items such as mailboxes or trash cans, and find open paths through crowds at a range of 20 inches to 26 feet depending on the size of the object. This customized version of the Miniguide (see separate entry) has an extra push button for access to the gap finding modes. The device comes with a print guide book (model 1-07006-00) or a braille guidebook (model 1-07007-00). An optional instructor's remote unit allows instructors to receive the same tactual feedback as their students. This brailler can accommodate standard 8.5 x 11 paper and paper up to 14 inches. Keys are set low, and keystrokes are quiet and require low force. The end-of-line bell is audible but muted. An eraser button allows the user to push one button to erase an entire braille cell. The base is also a handle. The back panel can be raised to provide a flat surface for reading the page, and the front panel margin guides are accessible from the front. The unit has a metal inner frame and parts, with a high-impact polycarbonate outer shell. Paper-feed knobs are designed to be held and turned easily.     The Sherlock Talking Label Identifier is voice output labeleing system designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The system includes a digital voice recorder with adhesive labels and plastic disc tags, which can be attached to clothing, medications, packaged products, frozen foods, documents, books, or CDs. Each recorded message is keyed to one of the labels or tags. To make a voice label, the user holds the recording unit against the label or tag, pushes two buttons, and records the label information. To read a label, the user holds the unit against the label or tag, and pushes one button. The recording unit holds up to two-and-a-half hours of recorded information and supports up to 2,000 labels. Labels can be erased and reused. The recording/ playback unit has a built-in speaker that also serves as its microphone for recording. It also has an earphone jack for private listening. Labels are made of pressure sensitive paper that can be adhered the item being labeled. Tags are made of plastic with a key-fob type hole at the top. A safety pin, rubber band, or string through this hole attaches tags to objects. Along with the recording/playback unit, the system comes with 25 labels, 10 tags, a zippered carrying case, cassette instructions, and a print and braille Quick Start Guide and parts list. This unit charges up to six batteries at once, with two charging compartments for flat 9-volt batteries and four compartments for cylindrical double-A, triple-A, C, or D cells. Batteries can be charged in any combination. The compartment number and charging status of batteries are announced as batteries are placed in the unit, when charging is complete, or when the user presses a button. This unit charges only the following types of batteries: Nickel-cadmium (NiCad); nickel-metal hydride (NiMH); and rechargeable alkaline-manganese (RAM). The unit is available in English and Spanish versions.

    The Zeitgeist Talking Time Machine is a voice output unit with clock, calendar, timer, and stopwatch functions, designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This portable electronic device combines a number of time-related functions and speaks through either its integrated speaker or headphones (not included). The unit tells time (including dual time zone) in hours, minutes, and seconds, and automatically adjusts to Daylight Savings Time and leap years. Its talking calendar tells the current day of the week, date, calendar week, number of days passed and remaining in the year, and the current zodiac sign. The user can set up to 10 different alarms, each with a separate signal, along with a stopwatch and two countdown timers (seven day and one hour). The unit manages up to 10 non-recurring or recurring appointments, and calculates age in years, months, days, minutes, and seconds or the day of the week for any date. The unit fits in a pocket or can be carried around the neck on the attached lanyard. It comes with instructions on audiocassette as well as a braille and large print quick-start sheet.
