This playback software enables users to play DAISY-standard digital talking books, save time finding information, and improve reading productivity. Text can be read aloud with or without an on-screen display. Users have the option of navigating a book by individual sections or segments or by going directly to a specific page, and can determine their location within the book using the program's "Where am I?" feature. Users can search the text or navigation tree to find desired information, and can add notes or bookmarks to any page. Menus, buttons, search tools, and bookmarks all have self-voicing capability.      Talking Rx is a voice output medication label reader and reminder device designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This system is a 50-second digital recording device that fits on the bottom of a perscription bottle. 12-, 13-, or 16-dram prescription bottle. A doctor or pharmacist records prescription information and instructions into Talking Rx, and the user can then hear the recorded information and instructions by pushing a small red button. The device produces clear, audible voice playback at 80-85 decibels. Messages can be up to 60 seconds long, and each message can be played up to 150 times. To record a message, the doctor or pharmacist actuates a record button and while holding the record button down, records the message by speaking into Talking Rx. Talking Rx can be used repeatedly.      TapMemo is a voice-activated personal data assistant (PDA)designed for use by individuals with blindness or low vision or with upper extremity disabilities. This device has one multi-functiontional button and two volume buttons. All verbal commands are speaker independent, eliminating the need to train the unit and enabling it to work right out of the box. Features include a memo pad, calendar, phone book, clock and more. Up to 30 memos, each up to one minute long, can be recorded. Each memo is given a name and then can be called upon simply by saying its name. The user is able to hear all memos played back and scroll back and forth. User can delete a single memo or all memos. The phone book can contain up to 60 entries. Each entry can store one phone number of up to 48 digits and 7 seconds voice recording of additional data such as an address. The user can command the unit to dial a certain number. By placing the unit near a telephone handset, the unit will emit DTMF tones corresponding to the number and the phone will dial them -no buttons pressed. User is able to hear all names played back and scroll back and forth. User can delete a single name or all names. The Can contain up to 30 appointments, each having a reminder. Each appointment is given a name and seven seconds voice recording of additional data. The user is able to hear all appointments played back chronologically and scroll back and forth. The user can delete a single appointment or all appointments. The device also offers a 24-cycle alarm clock which features a progressive wake up mechanism that will increase the volume gradually. A locking command enables the user to lock the unit against unwanted use and protect stored personal data. A unit locator is also included. Whistling will cause the unit to speak a high volume, short phrase that enables the user to locate the unit. Other features include includes an earphone jack, a charging jack, and a belt clip on the back. The unit is also equipped with a hidden reset button.      Thermo-Pen II is a thermal pen designed for use in the creation of tactile images and messages for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Like Thermo-Pen I (see separate entry), Thermo-Pen II is a writing instrument designed to create a raised image directly on tactile graphics paper. By holding the pen vertically above a sheet of Flexi-Paper (see separate entry) and passing it slowly across the paper (no pressure necessary), a tactile image is formed. Thermo-Pen II also creates tactile images at a higher rate of speed than Thermo-Pen I. It has a built-in control knob that turns it on and off and controls the temperature of the tip.      The UltraCane is a vibrating electronic mobility aid and obstacle detector designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. Designed to help users move around more safely, confidently and effectively, this cane has the shape of a long white cane with a collapsible shaft and a contoured handle, and uses ultrasonic echoes to detect obstacles ahead of the user, including obstacles in the user's path and at head level. It converts this information into vibrating buttons in the handle which tell the user where an object may be and how far away the obstacle lies.
