    ALT-Chat is a dynamic display communicator designed for use by individuals with communication or speech disabilities. This compact PDA-based dedicated communication device provides digitized (recorded) and synthesized (computer generated) speech output through direct selection of symbols or through spelling. For individuals using symbols to communicate, it includes the ability to use photos or choose from over 10,000 included symbols. The appearance and size of buttons and the number of buttons on a page can be customized. A number of pre-stored vocabulary page sets are included. Features for users who spell include word and letter prediction, abbreviation expansion, and grammar buttons. The user can choose between three voice synthesizers. NeoSpeech offers high- quality voice synthesis in American English, Loquendo offers speech synthesis in six different languages, and DECtalk offers the classic voices of alternative and augmentative communication, including a child’s voice. The hardware platform is Prentke Romich Company’s Springboard Lite (see separate entry), a robust device with a color display and switch access ports.     Bluebird II is a direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with communication, speech, or cognitive disabilities. This device has 10 communication overlays, each with 24 buttons in a 6 by 4 configuration. Messages are digitally recorded (up to six hours total) and stored on a 256 megabyte memory card. Recorded messages are played by pressing the corresponding button on the overlay or by using a connected switch for one or two switch auditory scanning. Four jacks are provided to allow remote access by an external switch. The device also has a toy control overlay and two jacks for adapted toys, allowing toys to be controlled from the device's keyboard. Other features include built-in legs that can be flipped up to provide a 15-degree tilt, a hand-strap on the back of the device for carrying, and accessible volume control buttons. This calculator program can be used as a classroom math aid for teachers and students. Multiple key layout options and access modes are provided to suit specific teacher and student needs. The user can edit and reassign key names and functions; display calculator key layouts at any size, up to full-screen, with high-contract keys and digits; enter answers to problems with or without using the calculator functions; specify and save layout, access, sound, miscellaneous, and work options (for example, scan interval, say value, auditory scan, scroll/normal register); and display or print records of student progress. Scanning modes include auto, inverse, and one- or two-switch scans, and dwell access for head-pointing devices. In the Problem Editor, teachers can view, create, and edit math problems and save lists of problems. Numeric problems and word problems are entered just as they will be displayed to the student.     ChatBox 40 is a direct selection and scanning communicator designed for use by individuals with communication or speech disabilities. This voice output device speaks pre-recorded messages when the user presses buttons on the adjustable keyboard display. The unit also supports switch scanning options for individuals who are unable to press buttons. The keyboard display supports 10 large keys or 40 standard-sized keys, with ten levels of messages. Single-switch, dual-switch, and joystick scanning are available in row/column, linear, directional, latched, direct, and step scanning modes. All scanning modes are visually supported with lights on the keys. The scanning time is variable from 0.1 to 10 seconds. The text of recorded messages and menu-driven setup utilities can be displayed on a two-line LCD display. This sturdy voice-output device speaks pre-recorded (digitized) or synthesized messages when the user presses buttons on its alphabetic/symbolic keyboard, which has 40 keys with 10 levels for a total of 400 messages. The device has 30 minutes of recording time, and supports single-switch, dual-switch, and joystick scanning, with auditory prompts for individuals with visual disabilities. Messages also appear on a two-line liquid crystal display (LCD). Keyboard grid formats are adjustable, and the unit can be connected to a computer to provide keyboard emulation.     ChatPC-4 is a direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with communication or speech disabilities or cerebral palsy. The unit has a color touch screen dynamic display that allows hundreds of communication pages to be linked together to meet the user’s communication needs for home, school, work, and other situations. The number of buttons on a page can be customized, along with the size, color, background, symbol, font, label, message, and action of each button. Vocabulary can be added and edited, and photos and other graphics can be imported for use as symbols. The unit comes with 3,000 picture communication symbols (PCS) and Loquendo and NeoSpeech speech synthesizers with male and female voices. Both synthesizers can pronounce words in U.S. English; Loquendo can also pronounce words in UK English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. The included DesktopChat software has approximately 10,000 PCS symbols and 3,000 Imagine symbols. Software includes PalmChat, a word-based vocabulary program; VocabPC; 16 Primary and 16 Basic starter vocabularies; and Saltillo Sampler. The unit’s hardware is a rugged industrial PocketPC computer with a rubber housing. A screen protector also serves as a stand. Inserts on the back accommodate a wheelchair mounting plate and loops at the bottom of the unit accommodate a carrying strap. There are three models. The Standard model has limited text functions for individuals who primarily use symbols for communication, while the Plus model has word prediction dictionaries and other text-based features for individuals with existing or emerging literacy skills. This portable dynamic touchscreen device allows hundreds of communication pages to be linked together to meet an individual’s communication needs for home, school, work and other situations in his/her life. The unit comes preinstalled with PalmChat, a generative, core word vocabulary, as well as other vocabulary files and page sets. Vocabulary can be added, and the size, color, background, symbol, font, label, message and action of each button can be customized. Photos and other graphic symbols can be added. The unit comes with Loquendo, NeoSpeech, and DECtalk speech synthesizers. Loquendo provides speech synthesis in U.S. English, UK English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Canadian French, American Spanish, or Portuguese. NeoSpeech is only available in American English, but has a natural and easy-to-understand voice. DecTalk features a classic synthetic voice. All speech options offer both male and female voices, and DecTalk includes a child voice as well. Three models are available. The Standard model is for individuals who primarily use symbols for communication; it includes keyboard pages for spelling, but does not include other text-based capabilities. The Plus and Dedicated Plus models are intended for individuals with existing or emerging literacy skills; in addition to all of the features of the Standard model, the Plus and Dedicated Plus models include word prediction, abbreviation expansion, and the ability to load, edit, and save text files. All models are based on a PocketPC computer, and Standard and Plus models are capable of running Pocket PC applications; however, in order to meet guideline for Medicare and Medicaid, the Dedicated Plus model can only be used as a communication device and does not run Pocket PC applications.     The Jelly Beamer Twist Switch is a wireless button or touch switch designed to control a wide range of switch-adapted devices and toys for individuals with upper extremity or severe physical disabilities or spinal cord injury. This switch has two components: the Jelly Beamer switch that houses a transmitter and the Jelly Beamer receiver that can be plugged into any switch-adapted device, from battery operated toys and electric appliances to a digital camera or computer. Each switch is uniquely paired with its receiver, allowing more than one switch to be used at the same time without interference, from as far away as 30 feet. This switch comes with four twist-off tops, enabling the user to change switch colors as desired. POWER: Transmitter and receiver each use two double-A batteries (not included). COLOR: Blue, red, yellow, snd green buttons are included. Optional sets include Semi-formal with blue-grey, deep green, and merlot tops and Business Casual with classic black, modern grey, and khaki tops.

    Lex is a direct selection communicator designed for use by individuals with cognitive, communication, or speech disabilities. Three messages of up to 20 seconds each can be recorded and stored for single message playback. Messages can be recorded in any order. The device can be used as a stand-alone communication aid or paired with TalkingMyWay Object Communication cards (not included) to create talking schedules. The device can be used for multi-room communication stations, and can be attached to a wall or placed on a tray or table-top. The volume is adjustable. POWER: Uses 4 triple-A batteries (included). DIMENSIONS (HxLxW): 1.75 (at maximum slope) x 8.75 x 5.33 inches. The keypad is 5 x 7 inches.

    The Mini Relax is an environmental control unit designed to operate televisions, video cassette recorders, and other infrared operable devices. This scanning infrared transmitter controls the TV, VCR, or any other device that operates using infrared technology. The unit has the capacity to store up to six functions, such as changing channels and volume. Scanning provides auditory and visual feedback with adjustable scan speed and auto scan or hold scan.     Picture Master Language Software (PMLS) is a symbolic language picture creation program designed for use by individuals with communication or speech disabilities. This software can be used to create communication overlays on a computer or to program a portable Bluebird II communication device (see separate entry). The software has over 3,000 symbols, including black-and-white simple line drawings, color simple line drawings, black-and-white realistic drawings, color realistic drawings, photos, and animated .gif files. To create a communication board, the user chooses a grid and then places symbols onto the grid. Each symbol includes a label and recording in both English and Spanish. Users can choose the language of both the recording and the label, and pre-defined pictures can be replaced with personalized images.

  14. POINT IT Picture of POINT IT

    Point It is a joystick mouse emulator designed for use by individuals with upper extremity or grasping disabilities. This USB joystick allows smooth proportional control of all mouse functions, including left click, double click, right click, drag and drop, and latching. The force required to activate the joystick is 9 ounces. The unit also has external switch jacks for users who require a larger target area for the left and right click. The unit comes with TypeMatic, an on screen keyboard program. COMPATIBILITY: For use n IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows XP.     The PowerLink 4 Control Unit is a control switch interface unit designed for use by individuals with upper extremity or neurological disabilities or cerebral palsy. This unit enables switch users to control up to two electrical appliances with single switches. Six modes of control allow the user to define exactly how, and for how long, appliances will be turned on. The unit accepts any single switch, including AbleNet’s Big or Jelly Beamer wireless switches (see separate entries). The unit is set up using a built-in display. Flexible outlets allow custom positioning and independent activation of of the appliances. The unit has two switch input jacks and Linkable wireless technology for use with multiple Big or Jelly Beamer switches. Modes of control include Direct (behaves like a traditional switch); Count (behaves like Direct and shows number of activations); Two-Switch (behaves like Direct, both switches must be activated); Timed Seconds (runs appliance from 1 to 99 seconds); Timed Minutes (runs appliance from 1 to 99 minutes); Latch (first activation turns appliance on, second activation turns it off).

    Prepositions! Sterling Edition is a language and vocabulary tutorial program designed for use by children with autism, developmental disabilities, or language-learning disabilities. This program helps children master essential prepositions. Six modules cover ten prepositions in developmental order: in, on, under, above, below, in front of, in back of, next to, and between. Three-dimensional characters and objects illustrate the prepositions while keeping students focused and engaged in the learning process. Using Optimized Intervention technology, the program begins with an assessment and then continually adjusts the lesson delivery based on a student's responses to provide individualized intervention. The program collects data to document student performance and provides built-in reports on students' learning activities over time. COMPATIBILITY: For use with Macintosh and IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: The Windows version requires a 300 megaHertz (MHz) processor or higher; hard drive with Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP or later; 64 megabytes (MB) RAM; 40 MB available disk space; a Windows compatible sound card; and an 8x speed CD-ROM.     The Randomizer is a random message communicator designed for use by individuals with cognitive, communication, or speech disabilities. This device can record a series of messages and play them back in a random order. The Randomizer offers 90 seconds of recording time per level. Levels are independent and messages can be recorded in any order. Messages can be played by touching the surface of the device or using a connected external switch. Modes of operation include single message, jumble (messages play in random order), and eliminator (messages occur in random order, but once a message is played, that message is not played again until all messages have been played). Relay/switch output capabilities can be used for cause-effect skill building. Other uses for the Randomizer include greetings, rolling dice, choosing colors for a game, and picking teammates. Volume is adjustable. The device has an external speaker jack, an external switch jack and a relay jack for cause-and-effect use. POWER: Uses 9 volt battery (included). The membrane surface is very sensitive. This keyboard allows the user to control both keyboard and mouse functions. All mouse directions, right and left click, double click, and drag functions are performed by pressing directly on keyboard keys while in Mouse Mode. The force required to activate keys is 3.5 ounces.
