JAWBONE
JawBone is an interface program that allows the coordinated use of the JAWS for Windows screen reader program and the Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition program by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This product provides the necessary code for interoperability of Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional version 6.0 and JAWS for Windows version 4.0 and higher (neither included, see separate entries). It includes a lexicon of new commands to make operating a personal computer by voice easier for individuals who are visually impaired or have dyslexia or other learning disabilities. In addition, it includes specific commands for NaturallySpeaking, Microsoft Word, Notepad, WordPad, Outlook and Internet Explorer. MagniTalk is a voice input program designed for use individuals with low vision. This interface program allows the coordinated use of the Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice input program and the Zoomtext screen magnification program. The program provides direct speech access to the Zoomtext user interface, serving as a bridge between Zoomtext from AI Squared and Dragon NaturallySpeaking from ScanSoft (see separate entries). Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Zoomtext can be used and configured configured separately or in tandem. COMPLETE READING SYSTEM
The Complete Reading System is a voice output optical character recognition program designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. Most functions of this OCR program can be activated by pressing a single key. When the user presses the F5 key, the program activates the scanner and recognizes the text. When the scanning is finished, the user presses the F6 key and the program starts reading. This OCR program has full talking menus, so no screen reader is required to navigate through its settings. The system works as well on laptops as it does on desktops, because it does not require use of the external keypad. The program has auto page orientation, so the user can place the document on the scanner at almost any angle and it will still be recognized. In addition to scanned material, the program can open and read existing documents. It supports virtually every type of word processor. The default file format is Microsoft Word. Other features include 5 different voices (Cepstral Voices included); the ability to zoom up to 400 percent and to change font and background colors; ADF support; large print talking menus; and word tracking while reading. DRAGON NATURALLYSPEAKING
Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a voice input and voice output program designed for use by individuals with spinal cord injury or upper extremity, vision, or learning disabilities. This voice recognition system enables hands-free operation of personal computers and permits users to speak at their normal pace. The program also permits hands-free mouse operation using MouseGrid technology. Users can create, move, edit, and format text by voice command in virtually all Windows applications, including word processors, spreadsheets, web browsers, and more. The program integrates with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and most other Windows applications, allowing spoken text to appear immediately in a document. Select-and-Say editing permits editing by voice. Corrections can be made by voice or by keyboard, and corrections can be made immediately or delayed to a later time. The program also offers dictation playback, enabling the user to hear what he or she has written before editing. Text-to-speech capability also enables users to have their own documents or other files such as e-mail read aloud. The program supports multiple users and each user "trains" the system as it is being used; the system learns accents, dialects, and individual pronunciations automatically. The program has a 230,000-word vocabulary, with a 30,000-word plus active vocabulary. The vocabulary includes spelling, pronunciation, punctuation, usage, and context recognition information. E-Text Reader is a voice output program designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision or learning disabilities. This software reads text files aloud using Cepstral Voices. It can open and read entire files or read user-selected text within a document. An Auto Summarize feature summarizes the information in a document or selected text. Words are highlighted as they are read. Highlighting colors can be changed by clicking the mouse. The user can change voices and reading speed, and insert bookmarks and highlighting to mark locations in the text. All functions can be controlled with hot keys or icons on the toolbar. The document can be magnified up to four times, and font style, font size, and foreground and background colors can be changed. The program has a built-in electronic manual which can be read aloud. It is compatible with multiple file formats including Standard Text, MS Word (all versions), HTML, and Rich Text Format. The program can read electronic documents aloud using digital voices and translate them into eight different languages: French, Spanish, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, and Japanese. Electronic formats that can be read and translated include Rich Text Format, Standard Text, and HTML, and all versions of MS Word. Words are highlighted as text is read. The user can change reading speed, font style and size, and foreground, background, and highighting colors. Bookmarks can be inserted. J-Say Professional is a voice input program designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This product enables users of JAWS for Windows (see separate entry) to talk to the computer using a natural voice, and obtain speech feedback of their dictation and other related on-screen activity. This program supports use of the voice for computer input and control in conjunction with the keyboard. The program can be used for writing and formatting documents in a word processor such as Microsoft Word, writing e-mail, and navigating the Internet. Users can also set and locate bookmarks within Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Internet Explorer using voice input. The program includes an interactive help system containing information about the program, specific to each application. Users can train the speech recognition software to understand the voice, as well as having speech based access to the suite of features and facilities contained within Dragon Naturally Speaking (see separate entry). The program comes on a CD-ROM with a web-based interface, and comes with Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred version 7; a basic headset/microphone; and a manual in print, braille, and HTML. WYNN Wizard and WYNN Reader are voice output, web browser, and text editor programs intended to help individuals with learning disabilities to read, write, study, and comprehend text more effectively. WYNN can read aloud ASCII text files, standard word processing files, digital talking books (DAISY and NIMAS), PDF files, web pages, and e-mail using RealSpeak Solo, which offers multiple voices and languages. Text is highlighted as it is read, and the user can control the speed at which text is read. WYNN can create and edit text and word processing files and convert them to PDF. It also includes word prediction and dictionary functions. WYNN offers a fully functional web browser that has pop-up blocking, and it is compatible with Java, Flash and WebCT.
