  1. EYE-PAL Picture of EYE-PAL

The Eye-Pal is an optical character recognition device designed for use by individuals who are blind or deaf blind. This portable USB scanner/reader connects to a computer and instantly converts printed material into speech, text files, or refreshable Braille (when used with a Braille display from manufacturers such as Freedom Scientific, Optelec, or Handytech). The unit has two lightweight legs that pivot into an L-shaped arrangement from their compact carrying position. This securely supports the unit so its scanning camera can obtain a clear image of the material to be read. It also serves as a tactile guide for users to position the material to be scanned. The unit's motion detector can scan up to 20 pages per minute in a bound book as the user turns a page, waits for the shutter sound, and turns the page again. A single keystroke can start or stop scanning or reading. Text can be saved as a text file for future editing. The unit can also describe a page layout as a sighted person sees it. The Eye-Pal reads in a male or female voice. COMPATIBILITY: For use with Windows-based PC or Apple Macintosh computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: For Windows-based computer, Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 7 operating system; 2 gigahertz (GHz) Pentium or equivalent AMD processor; 1 gigabyte (GB) memory; 1 GB free space on hard drive; USB 2.0 port; and DVD drive for installation. For Apple Macintosh computers, OS X Version 10.5 or higher operating system; Intel processor; 1 GB memory; 2 GB free space on hard drive; USB 2.0 port; DVD drive for installation. WEIGHT: 1 pound.

  2. EYE-PAL SOLO Picture of EYE-PAL SOLO

The Eye-Pal SOLO is a voice output reading machine and optical character recognition device designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This motion activated optical character recognition device reads from a book, newspaper, or other printed material automatically after the material is placed face down on the unit's scanner. Reading stops when the material is removed. When a hand is waved near the reading material, the reading pauses; when the hand passes again, the reading resumes. The unit can be connected to a monitor, and the magnified text will be automatically displayed with the words highlighted as they are spoken. OPTIONS: Keypad. DIMENSIONS: The base (WxL) is 9 x 11 inches. WEIGHT: 7 pounds.

  3. EYE-PAL SOLO LV Picture of EYE-PAL SOLO LV

The Eye-Pal SOLO LV is a voice output reading machine and video magnifier designed for use by individuals with low vision. This low vision reading system reads aloud almost any printed material. The unit is composed of a rectangular base with a camera mounted on at the top of an arm that extends from the center of one of the sides of the base. Some controls are located on the side of the base opposite the camera's support arm, and there is a handheld keypad that connects to the base with a cable. When a document, book or newspaper is placed on its base, the Eye-Pal SOLO LV begins to read the text aloud within seconds, regardless of the page's orientation. Reading can be controlled with the unit's controls, or hand movements made between the camera and the material can be used to pause and start the reading without touching the buttons. Up to four pages can be saved. To be used for magnification, the unit must be connected to a monitor or television. When a document is placed under the camera, the magnified text appears on the screen in a few seconds. Magnified text can be highlighted as it is read aloud. Magnified text is wrapped within the screen, and the magnification level, color, brightness, and contrast are all adjustable. In addition, small objects such as hearing aids and medicine bottles can be magnified in three increments up to 12 times their size on a 19-inch screen to facilitate reading of their labels.

  4. ZOOM-EX Picture of ZOOM-EX

Zoom-Ex is a portable low vision reading system designed for use by individuals with low vision. The device connects to an available USB port of an IBM or compatible computer (not included) to display magnified reading material on the monitor. Because the magnified lines wrap rather than run off the screen, the system does not require an X-Y table. Reading is accomplished by scrolling down the page. Once a page is scanned with Zoom-Ex, it stores the whole page in memory. It can be saved for future viewing or the magnified text can be printed for reading away from the computer. COMPATIBILITY: For use with IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: 1.8 gigaHertz (GHz) Celeron, 1.5 GHz Centrino, or equivalent AMD processor; minimum of 128 megabytes (MB) RAM; 30 MB free hard drive space; available high speed USB 2.0 port; optional second USB port for control pad; Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP (Service Pack 1 or later).

  5. ZOOM-TWIX Picture of ZOOM-TWIX

The Zoom-Twix is a video magnifier and optical character recognition (OCR) device designed for use by individuals with low vision. This system combines a digital scanner and OCR with a zoomable long distance camera to capture and magnify what's on a blackboard or whiteboard or on a desk, all controlled from a laptop computer keyboard. The foldable stand holds two autofocus cameras, while the edges of the stand and its anodized aluminum support legs act as an alignment guide for material to be scanned. The system enables the user to view and save the magnified image of a blackboard and write under magnification. A motion detector can scan an entire book at 20 pages per minute as the user turns the pages. The system can convert any printed text into multiple accessible formats such as speech, large print, audio file, or text files. Magnified text is wrapped within the screen. The system includes voice indicators and instructions. The Zoom-Twix folds down like a tripod to travel in a laptop bag. COMPATIBILITY: For use with an IBM compatible personal computer. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows XP, Vista (32 or 64 bit), or Windows 7 operating system; 2 gigahertz (GHz) Pentium or equivalent AMD processor; 1 GB RAM memory; 1 GB free space on hard drive; two USB 2.0 ports. WEIGHT: 2 pounds.
