    The Eye-Pal is an optical character recognition device designed for use by individuals who are blind or deaf blind. This portable USB scanner/reader connects to a computer and instantly converts printed material into speech, text files, or refreshable Braille (when used with a Braille display from manufacturers such as Freedom Scientific, Optelec, or Handytech). The unit has two lightweight legs that pivot into an L-shaped arrangement from their compact carrying position. This securely supports the unit so its scanning camera can obtain a clear image of the material to be read. It also serves as a tactile guide for users to position the material to be scanned. The unit's motion detector can scan up to 20 pages per minute in a bound book as the user turns a page, waits for the shutter sound, and turns the page again. A single keystroke can start or stop scanning or reading. Text can be saved as a text file for future editing. The unit can also describe a page layout as a sighted person sees it. The Eye-Pal reads in a male or female voice. COMPATIBILITY: For use with Windows-based PC or Apple Macintosh computers.     The Eye-Pal SOLO LV is a voice output reading machine and video magnifier designed for use by individuals with low vision. This low vision reading system reads aloud almost any printed material. The unit is composed of a rectangular base with a camera mounted on at the top of an arm that extends from the center of one of the sides of the base. Some controls are located on the side of the base opposite the camera's support arm, and there is a handheld keypad that connects to the base with a cable. When a document, book or newspaper is placed on its base, the Eye-Pal SOLO LV begins to read the text aloud within seconds, regardless of the page's orientation. Reading can be controlled with the unit's controls, or hand movements made between the camera and the material can be used to pause and start the reading without touching the buttons. Up to four pages can be saved. To be used for magnification, the unit must be connected to a monitor or television. When a document is placed under the camera, the magnified text appears on the screen in a few seconds. Magnified text can be highlighted as it is read aloud. Magnified text is wrapped within the screen, and the magnification level, color, brightness, and contrast are all adjustable. In addition, small objects such as hearing aids and medicine bottles can be magnified in three increments up to 12 times their size on a 19-inch screen to facilitate reading of their labels.

    Flipper is a video magnifier designed for use by individuals with low vision. Flipper consists of a lightweight camera that sits on a rolling base, rotates 225 degrees and connects to any television. The user points the camera in the desired direction and views the magnified image on the connected television screen. Control knobs allow the user to change the magnification level and contrast. This magnifier can also be connected to a computer monitor, although additional hardware may be required. Flipper can be used for near, intermediate, and distance viewing. The magnification range is 6 to 30 times original size for near objects and 1 to 12 times original size for distant objects. Flipper magnifies in full color with auto-focus magnification and multiple contrast options, and can magnify images on any surface. The system includes a video cable, switch assembly, and power adapter. OPTIONS: Flippper Stand allowing the unit to function as a desktop video magnifier (see separate entry); carrying case.     The i.d. mate Quest is a voice output bar code reader designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This portable talking bar code scanner provides voice identification of an item by scanning the item's bar code or Universal Product Code (UPC) label. It has a cyclone scanner that can read bar codes without exact positioning. As the user rotates the scanner around the product, it identifies the product and reads the product description aloud in a natural-sounding, synthesized voice. It comes with a database of nearly three million items with a wide variety of product descriptions. Users can add items to the database and record information about the new items or about existing products. Unlimited free database updates are offered by the manufacturer. The user can also record, play, erase, and organize messages in memo mode. There also is a "spell mode" function that provides spelling of names or information. Voice output pitch and speed are adjustable. The i.d. mate Quest's Wi-Fi connectivity and built-in camera offer extended ways for the user to gain information about and connect with their environment. It also features access to Google’s online database, online price check for items, currency identification, Skype video conferencing, international date and time zones, instant software and firmware updates, and an MP3 player. The unit has volume control and an earphone and microphone jack. This small, lightweight handheld unit comes with an adjustable around-the-neck lanyard; carrying case with strap; 100 pre-printed bar code labels; a 8 gigabyte (GB) memory card; and a user's guide on CD.     The knfbReader Mobile is a cell phone, optical character recognition device, and voice output reading machine designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The user takes a photo of the text to be read with the built-in cell phone camera, and the text is read aloud. An automatic viewfinder tells the user whether the entire document is in the photo. While the text is being read, the device can display the text on the phone’s built-in screen and highlight each word as it is spoken. The device can also recognize U.S. currency. Scanned text can be stored on a flash memory card, or transfered to and from a computer or a braille notetaker. Reading speed is adjustable. The cell phone is a Nokia N82 using a Symbian S60 operating system, with a built-in 5-megapixel autofocus camera with xenon flash. The phone has 40 megabytes (MB) free RAM, 50 MB free Flash storage, and a Flash card slot. Supported languages are US English or UK English. The device comes with polarizers for the camera and flash, and printed and on-device help files (braille available by request). OPTIONS: Voice output software for cell phone functions (Talks or MobileSpeak); GPS software; and phone case.

    MyReader2 is a video magnifier and CCTV designed for use by individuals with low vision. This low vision reading system scans pages placed on its reading tray, then presents the text in a user-selected format on the unit's built-in liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. Text can be presented as a wrapped paragraph (column layout), as a continuous line (row layout), or one word at a time (word layout). Readers navigate the text using a control panel, without moving the document or reading tray. This magnifier can store up to 10 pages simultaneously and 3 reference pages. The text display can be set to scroll automatically at a user-selected speed. Other display options include contrasting color combinations for presenting text; a live mode for handwriting and other manual tasks; autofocus; and automatic image deskew (straightening). The MyReader2 also can operate in split-screen mode, displaying input from personal computer (PC) via a VGA input port or an external camera through an NTSC/ PAL input port.
