    The knfbReader Mobile is a cell phone, optical character recognition device, and voice output reading machine designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. The user takes a photo of the text to be read with the built-in cell phone camera, and the text is read aloud. An automatic viewfinder tells the user whether the entire document is in the photo. While the text is being read, the device can display the text on the phone’s built-in screen and highlight each word as it is spoken. The device can also recognize U.S. currency. Scanned text can be stored on a flash memory card, or transfered to and from a computer or a braille notetaker. Reading speed is adjustable. The cell phone is a Nokia N82 using a Symbian S60 operating system, with a built-in 5-megapixel autofocus camera with xenon flash. The phone has 40 megabytes (MB) free RAM, 50 MB free Flash storage, and a Flash card slot. Supported languages are US English or UK English. The device comes with polarizers for the camera and flash, and printed and on-device help files (braille available by request).     The Kurzweil - National Federation of the Blind Reader is a voice output optical character recognition device designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This handheld unit scans text and reads it aloud with synthetic speech. The user holds the unit's camera over print, and it snaps a picture. In seconds it reads the contents of the printed document in clear synthetic speech. Scanned text can be discarded, stored for later reading, or transferred to a computer or braille notetaker/ PDA. To aid the user in aiming the camera, the unit provides a spoken Field of View report, telling the user which of the edges of a document are within the camera's field of view and how large the image is in the viewing area. There is also a viewfinder for sighted use. The device has nine control buttons, a visual display screen, and a headphone jack. POWER: Uses household current and a rechargeable camera battery. An extra battery and an external recharger are included.

    Kurzweil 1000 is an optical character recognition (OCR) program with voice output designed for individuals who are blind or have low vision. This software package runs on a personal computer connected to a flatbed scanner. It scans books, magazine articles, and other printed documents, converts the printed text into electronic text files, and reads them aloud using RealSpeak, a human-sounding synthetic speech engine. Scanned documents can be edited using a text editor with voice output. Definitions, synonyms, and spell checking are provided by a dictionary and thesaurus containing 175,000 words. Scanned files can be sent to portable devices such as braille notetakers. The program also retains images from scanned documents and displays them on the screen in a wide variety of magnification levels. COMPATIBILITY: For use with IBM and compatible computers.
