Picture of INTEL READER The Intel Reader is a voice output reading machine designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision or who have reading-based learning disabilities. This hand-held mobile device captures printed text, converts it to digital text, and reads it aloud. Reading is accomplished by pointing the Intel Reader's built-in camera at the printed material, snapping a picture, and listening to the spoken read-out. The user can change voices, select voice gender, and change pitch and playback speed. If desired, the unit can read the built-in menus to assist the user with managing content. The device's display screen allows the user to view, highlight, and change text size as necessary, manage stored documents that can be further transferred to other devices such as the Victor Reader Stream (not included; see entry) or a computer, and capture large amounts of text using the Portable Capture Station to capture multiple images at one time (sold separately). A library feature enables users to bookmark favorite documents for fast access. Users can navigate within a document by word, sentence, or by page, and they can go to a specific page or jump to the beginning or the end of the document. During playback, the text is highlighted as it is read aloud, and users can have the Reader pause and spell out highlighted words. The Reader plays most content, including MP3, DAISY books, or text transferred from a computer. The unit features an Intel Atom Processor, a liquid crystal display (LCD)screen, integrated speakers, a built-in five-megapixel camera with auto focus and flash, and a four-gigabyte (GB) hard drive for storing approximately two GB of user data (up to 600 processed pages with images and text and up to 20 pages waiting to be processed or up to 500,000 text-only pages). The unit also has USB 2.0 Type A and USB 2.0 Type Mini B connectivity and a stereo audio jack for use with earphones. A carrying case with shoulder strap is included. POWER: Uses rechargeable 6-cell lithium-ion battery for more than four hours of text-to-speech or MP3 audio or capturing 85 images of text. The battery lasts up to five days in standby mode. A power adapter/charger is included. OPTIONS: Intel Portable Capture Station for capturing large amounts of text. DIMENSIONS (HxLxW): 5.35 x 6.5 x 1.3 inches. The LCD screen is 4.3 inches. WEIGHT: 1.38 pounds (0.63 kilograms) with battery.
