The Optical Braille Reader (O.B.R.) Expands Communications Opportunities for Blind People

By Williams, John M.; National Organization on Disability E-Newsletter,
Publication Date: April 2002

Article describing Optical Braille Recognition (OBR) software from Sighted Electronics, which is an optical character recognition program that converts Braille to text. When using OBR software, users place a Braille page on a scanner, where the Braille is converted to text and then printed. A 15-year-old student who is blind tested the program, and was able to copy a Braille page in under a minute. The program can save Braille documents to disk as formatted Braille files, and reprint Braille books using a Braille embosser.
