Voice Mate – An Ideal Electronic Organizer for People with Disabilities

By Williams, John M.; National Organization on Disability E-Newsletter, June 2002
Publication Date: June 5, 2002

Article describing the Voice Mate from Parrot, which is a talking phone book, voice notepad, appointment book, and talking alarm clock. The Voice Mate can be useful for people who are blind or have low vision, have learning disabilities, and people who cannot use a keyboard or write legibly. The product features a clicker, a liquid crystal display, microphone, function key, edit keys, keypad, and an earphone jack. The clicker is used to control most of the Voice Mate’s functions. For example, in the Phone Book function, a double click will command the program to speak the displayed number. In the Memo and Meeting Planner functions, double clicking plays back the message or appointment that is selected. The Voice Mate is lightweight and can be easily carried in a pocket or purse.
