Telemergency, an Emergency Telephone DialerBy Berger, Sandy; AARP.org,
Publication Date: April 2002
Article describes Telemergency, which is an emergency telephone dialer designed for people who are elderly, disabled, or who live alone. Telemergency allows those in need call for help in case of an accident, a medical problem, or an intrusion such as a burglary. Once connected to the user’s touch-tone service telephone, all the user has to do is push a button on the unit or a pendant. Telemergency will silently and automatically dial 911 as well as up to five additional telephone numbers of the user’s choice for each of three emergencies: (1) health and/or accident, (2) fire, and (3) burglary. A pre-recorded emergency message is then delivered to each specified number. Telemergency emits a sound to let the user know that help is on the way. Once the called party answers and receives the emergency information message and instructions, a speakerphone option can be activated to allow the called party to verbally communicate with the caller. The two-way verbal contact is valuable for sharing critical information and assuring that help has been dispatched.
