Automatic Head and Face Gesture Recognition

By Bishop, Jeffrey B., PhD; Evans, Isaac K., PhD; FUTH Technical Report TR001,
Publication Date: September 2001

Article discusses a project funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to develop a gesture recognition system for people with mobility impairments, and to collect data to develop a working prototype system. Various applications were coded to evaluate gesture recognition techniques. Extraction and recognition algorithms were examined using video sequence image data of multiple gestures for different participants. Results demonstrated the feasibility of using automatic face feature detection algorithms on participants with and without mobility impairments.
