BATS: The Blind Audio Tactile Mapping System

By Parente, Peter; Bishop, Gary; Carolina Computer Assistive Technology
(Pages: 6 pp.) Publication Date: March 2003

Article discusses the Blind Audio Tactile Mapping System (BATS) project, which focuses on helping students with visual disabilities to access and explore spatial information using standard computer hardware and open source software. The BATS project is used in presenting maps to people who are blind or have low vision by using speech synthesis, auditory icons, and tactile feedback. Spatial sound is added to position auditory icons and speech in three dimensions, and haptic feedback devices are used to provide additional map information through tactile vibrations and textures.
