The Role of Assistive Technology in the Provision of Educational Material for Children with a Visual Impairment in the Republic of Ireland
By Staglin, Ilka, MA; Assistive Technology - Shaping the Future: AAATE 2003 Conference Proceedings, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 180-184Publication Date: 2003
Article reports on statistical research in connection with a report on the services provided by the National Braille Production Center in Ireland. The research focuses on the role of assistive technology (AT) in educational settings, and is largely based on a survey conducted by the National Braille Production Center. The report shows that AT is available in many schools, and that children prefer and dislike some forms of AT. For example, some students reported that they enjoyed using a laptop computer with screen magnification software in school; others reported that they only liked to use AT in a home environment. A lack of coordinated implementation and training on the appropriate uses of AT were found, which could counteract the intended function of promoting inclusion in education.
