Communication for the Non-Speaking Deaf Using an Embedded Prediction System

By McCloskey, Anthony; McGinnity, Martin; Maguire, Liam; Assistive Technology - Shaping the Future: AAATE 2003 Conference Proceedings, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 309-314
Publication Date: 2003

Paper proposes a system that facilitates electronic communication among people who are deaf or hard of hearing who communicate mainly via sign language. An alternative approach is described called Sign Writing, which is based on a written form of sign language. The system incorporates a database of signs and an entry system that can be used to create new signs. A prediction system is incorporated to assist in the selection of signs from the database. This feature enables the user to maintain conversational speed between two hand-held devices. Sign Writing employs the user’s knowledge of sign language and conversation history. The customization will allow for sign predictions to be made, which could further increase conversational rates. Implications for further research are discussed.
