Improving Assistive Technology Services

By Saminem, A.L.; Kotiranta, P.L.; Assistive Technology - Shaping the Future: AAATE 2003 Conference Proceedings, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 389-392
Publication Date: 2003

Paper introduces the ITSE project, which is a national effort that aims to improve assistive technology (AT) services in Finland. The project is designed to improve knowledge and promote AT expertise of welfare and health care services staff, develop new models and networks, disseminate knowledge of new technical developments, and provide AT training to staff and clients. At the time the paper was written, the project was implemented in 18 local organizations and covered 350 municipalities. An objective project evaluation was performed, which consisted of three criteria: (1) a know-how questionnaire, (2) a progress evaluation, and (3) interviews. Preliminary results have demonstrated that the ITSE project is both necessary and effective for people with disabilities and clinicians. Implications for further research are discussed.
