Paper discusses the design of a robotic assistant called the Giving-A-Hand system, which was created to function in a kitchen. The Giving-A-Hand system consists of an arm with an elbow joint to provide elevation, which is followed by a prosthetic hand. The devices to be controlled by the Giving-A-Hand system are a microwave and a multifunctional device for preparing and cooking food. The user interface was created on a Viewpad 1000 personal computer. Utilizing a browser, the user can navigate though the device’s functions, and instruct the device to press the appropriate buttons on the appliances. The device was under construction at the time the article was written. Implications for device design and improvement are discussed.
