Attention Getter: Programs for Students With Severe Disabilities
By Hultgren, Debra; ConnSENSE Bulletin, Vol. 4, No. 2Publication Date: May 2002
Article reviews Attention Getter software from SoftTouch Software, which was created as a means for students with disabilities to combat boredom and entertain themselves. The program can be operated via mouse, single switch, Touch Window, IntelliKeys, or two switches. A touch of the chosen access device produces a variety of photos, which are paired with stimulating sounds and music. The photos morph into other photos to create an entertaining, engrossing visual display. The author used the program with a student who had multiple disabilities, including cerebral palsy. The student had no trouble using the program, and any time his attention began to wander the amusing sounds lured his focus back to the computer monitor. The author reported that she looks forward to continuing to use Attention Getter in her classroom.
