By Cohen, Susan R.; Closing the Gap, Vol. 23, No. 4, pp. 30-31
Publication Date: October/November 2004

Article discusses Boardmaker (Mayer-Johnson, LLC), which is a software program that educators can use to create variations of traditional educational tools, provide additional structure and information to lessons, and create unique designs for students’ individual learning needs. Boardmaker offers educators the flexibility to create content for preschool, elementary, and secondary school settings for a variety of students, including those with autism spectrum disorders, speech-language disabilities, cognitive disabilities, attention deficit disorder, developmental delay, and multiple disabilities. Educators can use Boardmaker to create a variety of personalized visual supports, including: (1) communication overlays, (2) picture exchange communication prompts, (3) daily classroom routine prompts, (4) speech-language therapy supports, (5) games, and (6) writing activities such as journals, letters, and essays. The newest version of Boardmaker has implications for facilitating improvement among all students by fostering responsibility, creativity, and feelings of self-worth.
