WordAloud
By Caviness, Rochelle; Large Print Reviews,Publication Date: June 2001
Article reviews the evaluation version of WordAloud from Cloudworld, Limited, which is an assistive reading program that can read text and HTML files. The program helps the user to read by displaying the chosen text one word at a time. WordAloud also includes an option that enables the text to be read out loud as it is displayed. The program was originally intended for use by people who are learning English as a second language, or people with learning disabilities. However, the program can also be valuable to people who have low vision due to its text-highlighting and voice output capabilities. The author only recommends the program for individuals with moderate vision loss, as the user interface is difficult for people to navigate with severely limited vision. Also, the author was not impressed with the WordAloud voices, as they are all described as “mechanical sounding.” The program is ultimately recommended, though, because it demonstrated great promise for an evaluation version.
