The Convergence of Mainstream and Assistive Technologies to Provide a Single Interface for Elders Who Have Lost Their Vision

By Hofstader, Chris; 2003 International Conference on Aging, Disability, and Independence, pp. 197-198
Publication Date: May 2004

Paper discusses ways that the PAC Mate from Freedom Scientific can serve as a valuable device for older people with low vision. PAC Mate is a personal digital assistant that can be used as a remote control, a global positioning system-based application, a cellular phone, an electronic book reader, and a bar-code scanner, among many other things. The device has a standard-sized keyboard and a clear synthesized speech output system, both of which have clear benefits for people with low vision. The author contends that users have reported tremendous success using the device, as it integrates a number of useful technologies into a compact, convenient design.
