Continuous Glucose Monitoring
By Block, Laurie, RD, CDE; Diabetes Self-Management, Vol. 22, No. 1, pp. 65-67Publication Date: January/February 2005
Article describes the CGMS System Gold, which is a continuous blood glucose monitor designed by Medtronic MiniMed. The system measures the glucose level of the interstitial fluid, which is the fluid between the cells and the body, just under the skin in ten-second intervals. The system then averages the readings over five-minute intervals and stores the averages to memory. This equals 288 recorded glucose levels during the course of a 24-hour period. Continuous readouts allow the CGMS System Gold to uncover patterns that are missed by conventional blood glucose monitors. The CGMS System Gold was not approved for making decisions regarding insulin doses at the time the article was published, though the data the system does provide can help to determine when conventional blood glucose monitoring should detect out-of-range blood glucose levels.
