By PN: Paraplegia News, Vol. 59, No. 5, pp. 55-62Publication Date: May 2005
Article discusses adaptive equipment that can enable people with spinal cord injuries to enjoy water activities. Pool transfer lifts can be used to transfer people with mobility disabilities into swimming pools, as different lifts are available for deck-level and above-ground pools. Other pool access equipment includes portable or permanent stainless-steel ramps with handrails, and pool steps that lead from a transfer bench for people who use wheelchairs that have sufficient upper-body strength. Removable parallel bars are also available for assisted water ambulation. A number of companies have created aquatic wheelchairs, such as Aqua Creekâs 16-, 18-, and 20-inch Stainless Steel Aquatic Wheelchair. The device has a flip-up arm for transfers, and can hold a capacity of 350 pounds. Also, the Landeez All-Terrain Wheelchair from Natural Access can be used for pool entry when fitted with indoor wheels. A list of companies that carry similar products is included.
Assistive Products Discussed: LANDEEZ ALL-TERRAIN WHEELCHAIR
