SAL Speech Assisted Learning

By Danielson, Christopher; Voice of the Nation's Blind,
Publication Date: October 2004

Article discusses educational software programs offered in the Speech Assisted Learning (SAL) Braille learning system. Two courseware offerings are discussed: (1) Beginning Braille for Young Readers, and (2) Bob Books First! Beginning Braille for Young Readers helps children to develop a rapid and smooth reading style. Students can develop efficient tactile discrimination skills, which provide them with a foundation with which to begin learning more advanced reading techniques. Bob Books First! is a 12-book set, each of which are written using 3-letter words and short sentences. This simplified structure allows beginning readers to develop early comprehension skills, as each book presents short vowels and single consonants. The SAL system describes the pictures on each page, which are featured in order to display the story line.
