The Pathfinder with Unity 128

By Rackensperger, Tracy; ConnSENSE Bulletin,
Publication Date: June 2005

Article reviews the Pathfinder augmentative communication device from Prentke Romich Company as used with Unity 128 vocabulary software. The Pathfinder is an electronic speech-generating device that is mainly used to assist children and adults with communication disabilities in daily social interactions. Users can choose to access the device through either direct selection or scanning methods. Direct selection allows the individual to choose a body part to directly access his or her device, while scanning allows the user to scroll through sets of communication options. The device is used with Unity 128 vocabulary software, which utilizes a method of assigning meanings to graphical icons or a combination of icons. People can use this method to create and store words or phrases for easy access. The Pathfinder with Unity 128 allows the user to access 128 keys, and to store thousands of word and phrase combinations. The device also features standard word prediction, and is capable of keyboard and mouse emulation. The author contends that the device has fit her needs as a researcher, writer, and presenter.
