Learning to Live Independently With Expert Systems in Memory Rehabilitation

By Man, D. W. K.; Tam, S. F.; Hui-Chan, C. W. Y.; NeuroRehabilitation: An Interdisciplinary Journal, Vol. 18, No. 1, pp. 21-29
Publication Date: 2003

Paper discusses Expert Systems (ES), which are a branch of artificial intelligence that have been utilized in medical consultation and in rehabilitation for assessment and intervention. The authors focus on the development and validation of an expert system for memory rehabilitation (ES-MR). Through a web-based platform, ES-MR can provide experts with the information to formulate interventions for people with brain injuries, stroke, and dementia. Implications for the creation of a more user-friendly version of such a program is discussed, which could be useful for providing remote assistance to people with disabilities that have a severe impact on memory. The potential use of ES-MR as a cognitive aid in conjunction with WAP mobile phones, Bluetooth technology, and Personal Digital Assistants is suggested for future research.
