iBOT 4000: New Model Gets Thumbs UpBy Samuels, Robert C.; New Mobility, Vol. 16, No. 147, pp. 25-26
Publication Date: December 2005
Article focuses on the iBOT 4000 from Independence Technology, which is an electric powered wheelchair that can climb stairs and raise the user to face-level with people who are standing. The iBOT also utilizes unique sensors that automatically adjust its balance to conform to the user’s center of gravity. A four-wheel function allows the user to climb up curbs up to five inches high, while users can traverse over sand, gravel, grass, and thick carpets. Some valuable changes were made to this edition, as the seat was lowered so that it fits under tables and desks. The iBOT 4000 also features simplified controls, swing-away footrests, a quieter ride, less required maintenance, and a lower price. The user can also stay in the chair in a vehicle if it is secured with four-point tie-downs. The device still cannot be driven from, however, as there is no way to secure it to the floor with an EZ Lock or a similar device.
