Read & Write Gold for Mac

By Kardos, Margaret, OTR/L, ATP; ConnSENSE Bulletin, Vol. 8, No. 1
Publication Date: January 2006

Article provides a review of Read & Write Gold for Macintosh from TextHelp, which is a scan-and-read program that can be used by students who could use some extra assistance in reading and writing assignments. When used as a word processing program, the program makes composition much easier by incorporating spell check, word prediction, homophone assistance, a voice-output dictionary, and screen reader features. Read & Write Gold also features Fact Finder, which allows students to highlight a topic and to access additional information via automatic web search without having to leave the application. Scanned text can be highlighted in a wide range of colors as it is read back in adjustable synthesized speech. The program’s tutorial, which is complete with automated “help” features, was found to be clearly labeled and easy to use. Overall, the author gives Read & Write Gold for Macintosh an “A” on its performance.
