Animated Speech's Team Up With Timo: Vocabulary

By Hopkins, Janet; Technology & Learning Magazine,
Publication Date: August 15, 2006

Article reviews Team Up With Timo: Vocabulary from Animated Speech, which is vocabulary-building software designed for early learners, students with learning disabilities, and students for whom English is a second language. Users receive instruction from an animated talking avatar tutor named Timo, who guides them through vocabulary lessons via picture/word recognition exercises as well as listening, speech, spelling, and comprehension components. For example, a lesson about airplanes provides the user with flashing images such as wings and a propeller to prompt the students to click on the matching words. The author finds that the program’s main advantages are its quick print reporting features, student profile and lesson customization features, user interface, and consistent lesson design. The main criticisms are the lack of a scanning feature or any option to allow switch access for students with physical disabilities and the lack of translation features for students who are just learning English. Overall, the author finds that Team Up With Timo: Vocabulary is a quality instructional alternative.
