Evaluation of Pedestrian Information and Communication Systems-A for Visually Impaired Persons

Paper discusses the prototype Pedestrian Information Communication Systems-A (PICS-A), which was created by researchers at the Universal Traffic Management Society of Japan and the Mitsubishi Precision Company. The system was designed to provide pedestrians with visual disabilities with the necessary information to help ensure their safety at traffic intersections. Infrared beacons are installed around the intesection to provide people with voice output directions and information, which includes the following: (1) the location and name of the intersection, (2) directions to the intersection, (3) directions to cross the pedestrian crosswalk, and (4) the appropriate time to begin walking. Preliminary tests have indicated that the PICS-A has promise as a safe and effective system for pedestrians with visual disabilities. Implications for future evaluations are discussed.
