Laureate's New Sterling Editions: Featuring Optimized Intervention and the Sterling Administration System

By Wilson, Mary Sweig; CSUN Technology and Persons With Disabilities Conference - 2002,
Publication Date: 2002

Article focuses on First Words, First Words II, and First Verbs Sterling Editions from Laureate Learning Systems, Incorporated, which are vocabulary tutorial programs that teach the user 10 nouns and 50 verbs. The programs are designed for people with a range of abilities, including young children with special needs and adults with developmental disabilities. The author discusses the programs’ Optimized Intervention feature, which uses artificial intelligence to monitor students’ performance and adjust program settings to the optimum level for the student. The Optimized Intervention feature also includes: (1) response-by-response monitoring of student performance, (2) continual management of instructional supports, and (3) comprehensive data collection and analysis. Once students begin to respond at higher levels with less instructional support, more context-specific instruction is utilized. Additional features for program administrators are discussed.
