Mobility Friendly Home

By Shuman, Kate; Today's Caregiver,
Publication Date: March/April 2005

Article provides guidelines on how to make a home as accessible as possible for people with mobility disabilities. The author contends that the first step is to ask the person with a mobility disability where they are experiencing the most difficulty in the home. Besides mobility and safety issues, it is also important to discuss other topics, such as where and how things are stored and how they go about preparing meals and other activities of daily living. Every detail, including alarm clocks and how food is placed in the cupboard needs to be taken into consideration. A detailed room-by-room description of various obstacles and appliances is listed.
