Evaluation of an Adaptive Row/Column Scanning System

By Simpson, Richard; Koester, Heidi; LoPresti, Ed; Technology and Disability, Vol. 18, No. 3, pp. 127-138
Publication Date: 2006

Study conducted to evaluate the Input Device Agent (IDA), which was designed to improve educational, vocational, and clinical interventions in terms of computer usage by people with disabilities. The IDA makes recommendations for scan period in row-column scanning systems, and evaluates the appropriateness of its recommendations. Two groups participated in the study: (1) eight people with spinal cord injuries or who were nondisabled, and (2) six people with cerebral palsy. Each participant was asked to select a target letter from a scanning matrix via single switch. The results indicated that the IDA could recommend an appropriate fixed scan period for single switch scanning. Implications for future research are discussed.
