Functional Electrical Stimulation

By Diffley, R.N., Suzanne; PN: Paraplegia News,
(Pages: p. 65) Publication Date: September 1994

The article explains the process of functional electrical stimulation, a medical technique that can restore movement of paralyzed limbs in some patients, in addition to restoring bladder and bowel control. It explains how FES operates to stimulate bladder/bowel muscles using implanted electrodes, and provides information about who may benefit from the surgery. The article also stresses the need for additional research in this relatively new area of technology. There is a phone number for the FES Information Center (800-666-2353) for additional information about FES.
