Environmental Control Unit Considerations for the Person with High-Level Tetraplegia
By Graf, Michelle Severe, Ellen Holle, Andrea; Topics in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation, Vol. 2, No. 3Publication Date: Winter 1997
Through the use of environmental control units (ECUs), individuals with high tetraplegia can regain a considerable amount of independence and control over their environment. ECUs provide for the remote control of multiple appliances, systems, and electrically operated devices and range from very simple units, which may control a single appliance, to very sophisticated and expensive units, which may control virtually every appliance in a house or office. Operating systems and methods of access are presented. An evaluation process, funding issues, and appropriateness of a variety of applications are also discussed.
