Protocol for Ventilator Management in High Tetraplegia

Individuals with high tetraplegia have significantly compromised respiratory systems, are susceptible to pulmonary complications, and frequently require mechanical respiratory assistance to survive. Indeed, while 83% of persons with complete C3 and C4 injuries can eventually wean successfully from mechanical ventilators, lifelong respiratory support typically is required for those persons who have neurologically complete injuries at C1 and C2.1
