Writing More, More Often and with Better Results

By Hardin, Susan; Miracola, Frank; Closing the Gap, Vol. 21, No. 5, pp. 1, 10-11
Publication Date: December 2002/January 2003

Article on Begin With Me!, a district-wide, classroom-based initiative that brings together educators from both special and general education to help young writers. The project brings technology and learning strategies into the writing process, with the results being that all students, in both special and general education, are writing more, writing more often, and with better results. The major components include a specially designed technology toolkit, on-going training and support, motivating reasons to write, and well-developed support teams. Tools include talking word processors, word prediction software, visual organization software, notetakers, and spell checkers. Learning to use these tools should prove to be instrumental in boosting students' confidence, which could help to pave the road to more effective writing and overall academic success.
