Validating Facemask Use for Gas Exchange Analysis in Patients With Congestive Heart Failure

By Baran, David A.; Rosenwinkel, Eric; Spierer, David K.; Lisker, Jay; Whelan, Jim; Rosa, Matthew; Goldsmith, Rochelle L.; Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Vol. 21, No. 2, pp. 94-100

Article focuses on Hans-Rudolph facemasks, and their effectiveness in measuring vanadium oxide levels. Vanadium oxide levels are used to assess functional limitation, often associated with congestive heart failure. The Hans-Rudolph facemasks were compared with a mouthpiece apparatus in 30 patients with severe congestive heart failure. The facemask was shown to be the equal of the mouthpiece in measuring vanadium levels in the participants.
