Homework Skills Improvement Kit

By Closing the Gap, Vol. 19, No. 3, pp. 11, 36
Publication Date: August/September 2000

Article describing the Homework Skills Improvement Kit, which provides parents of students with learning disabilities with all the tools needed to improve homework skills. The program begins with an overview of homework problems and how to assess them with a Homework Skills Checklist. An overall plan is developed to address the child's main difficulties. Difficulties can include writing homework assignments, bringing materials home, bringing completed work back to school, and getting feedback on homework. While much of the program is behaviorally based, resources are included that aid and facilitate the learning of homework skills. This includes a workbook of exercises, mock homework assignments, and how to form a behavioral program to develop, reinforce, and maintain acquired skills. The Homework Skills Tutorial Improvement Kit was designed for students ages six to fourteen.
