Around the House: Opening Doors

By Tannenbaum, Andrea; PN: Paraplegia News, Vol. 56, No. 7, p. 43
Publication Date: July 2002

Article describing seven home modification products for making it easier for individuals with physical disabilities to get through doors, including: (1) Lever Handles, (2) the Magic Motion Doorknob, (3) the Great Grips cover, (4) the Leveron Doorknob Adapter, (5) Offset Hinges, (6) Threshold Ramps, and (7) the Universal Grip. Lever Handles provide accessibility for people who have a difficult time grasping and turning a doorknob, as they can be pushed with the side of the hand or the elbow. The Magic Touch Doorknob is a push-pull knob that releases the latch without twisting the locks, but looks the same as a standard round doorknob. The Great Grips cover is a soft rubber-like aid with a small protrusion that enables the user to turn knobs or faucets with less effort. The Leveron Doorknob Adapter is another option, and it converts a round knob into a levered handle. Offset Hinges can push a door open an additional two inches, allowing the user to fully use the existing space within the doorframe. Threshold Ramps provide smooth access over a threshold without interfering with a door’s functioning. The Universal Grip is a tool that covers a doorknob and uses a handle to make it easy to turn.
