Assistive Technology: A.T. Funding Challenge

By Quintero, Alyssa; Quest, Vol. 14, No. 1, pp. 46-53
Publication Date: January/February 2007

Article focuses on funding sources for assistive technology (AT), as a number of alternatives to Medicare and insurance companies are discussed. For example, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) provides 2,000 dollars toward the one-time purchase of an augmentative and alternative communication device when it is prescribed by an MDA clinic physician. Federally funded state AT Act Programs are another possible source. These programs often provide short-term equipment loans, as well as replacement devices while equipment is being repaired. Some state programs partner with ATMatch.com, which is a national marketplace that matches AT donors and sellers with potential consumers. Strategies to allow individuals to combine various funding sources are discussed.
