Lighting the Way

By Bien, Alexei ; Edutopia ,
Publication Date: July 2007

Article focuses on Sound Shadows, which is an experimental photography program for students with visual disabilities at Governor Morehead School for the Blind. The project was conducted from 1992 to 1997, while a book titled “Seeing Beyond Sight” chronicles the experience of 36 students ages 12 to 19. The students learned how to point and shoot, and they were also taught to use a camera to recreate dreams and to express personal vision. They used autofocus cameras, which allowed them to use sound and touch as a way to compose their images. The book features roughly 150 images from the Sound Shadows program, along with captions from the student photographers.
