By Paggetti, Cristiano; Tamburini, Elena; From Smart Homes to Smart Care: International Conference on Smart Homes and Health Telematics (ICOST 2005), Vol. 15, No. 1, pp. 298-301
Publication Date: 2005

Article focuses on the DGHome platform, which is a home care service model consisting of technologies designed to support people with disabilities and older adults. Technology utilized in the platform includes home automation technologies, wearable devices, assistive technologies, and telemedicine. The system allows Telecare Service Center operators to perform real time monitoring and management of user’s requests, and includes personal alarms and scheduling features so that residents do not miss appointments and doctor visits. The following communication technologies are utilized: (1) telephone, (2) instant messaging, (3) video-conference, (4) telemonitoring of drug compliance, (5) e-government services, and (6) real time communication with agencies such as pharmacies, hospitals, and social services. Preliminary system evaluations have found that the DGHome platform is able to promote the security and safety requirements of older adults and people with disabilities, while promoting the effectiveness of health care services.
