Paper reports the findings of a series of focus groups designed to examine the process of acquiring and using workplace accommodations from the perspective of individual users. Three separate group interviews were conducted with people with communication, vision, and mobility impairments. These focus groups addressed consumers’ views on tools, equipment, and technology used at work, as well as their experiences with finding and procuring the right workplace accommodation. Accommodations required by participants included the use of braille, specialized lighting, ZoomText, and CCTVs for individuals with visual disabilities; pen and paper strategies, phone relay, finger spelling, and a trackball with head pointer for individuals with communication disabilities; and desk adjustments, movement of furniture, lowering file cabinets, and adjusting photocopiers, for individuals with mobility disabilities. This paper was presented at the 2007 Annual Conference of the Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America.
