Mobility Aid Protective Device
By Allen, Kurt S.; Mjahed, Othman; Sugar, Thomas; NSF 2005 Engineering Senior Design Projects to Aid Persons With Disabilities, pp. 48-49Publication Date: 2005
Description of a device designed to offer lightweight, easily-removable environmental protection for the Hover Round Activa electric mobility aid while being carried on an existing car carrier lift. Developed at the Bioengineering Program of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Arizona State University, the device is a lightweight aluminum frame covered with a waterproof, UV-resistant material. It utilizes a collapsible fabric door retractable by means of a mechanical pulley system driven by a reversible motor which connects to the existing line used for the lift mechanism, enabling the owner to drive the mobility aid into the device and close the cover while the lift is lowered, then raise the lift. Pre-existing holes in the lift’s floor allowed the design to mount to the lift without modifications to the lift itself. The combined weight of the device and the mobility aid is well within the capacity of the mechanical lift. This device could easily be adapted to other models of mobility aids, and will extend the useful life of the scooter for its owner. Cost of fabrication of the device was circa $550.
