Transferring Made Easier

By Special Living Magazine, pp. 22-29
Publication Date: Winter 2007

Article discusses products to aid in transferring from a wheelchair to other areas such as a bed or bathtub. Descriptions of transfer boards for moving to a bed or toilet include the Beasy Board, featuring tapered sides and a round swiveling disc on top. Overhead ceiling lifts for lowering a person into bed, a bathtub, or a wheelchair discussed include Surehands lift and care systems and Guldmann ceiling-mounted lifts. Overhead lifts ride on a ceiling track and can transport a person from one room to another. Electric bath lifts are remote-control battery-operated devices that lower and raise users into the bathtub; one model discussed is the Beluga, which features a reclining backrest. For people with slight mobility problems, the Super Pole is described, an 8-foot pole positioned next to the bed which can be fitted with accessories such as a trapeze bar and a bedside tray. Portable light-weight patient lifts described include the Likolight, made of aircraft aluminum, which folds down completely for easy transport. Pool lifts for transfer into a swimming pool or whirlpool spa discussed include models made by Aquatic Access Inc. which are powered by ordinary water pressure.
