Accessible Home: Container Gardening

By Rossetti, Rosemarie; Action Magazine,
Publication Date: April 3, 2008

Article offers advice to people who use wheelchairs for creating a container garden. For best accessibility, and to ensure they are large enough to hold roots, containers that are 24 inches tall and at least 10 inches in diameter are recommended. Various container materials are discussed, as are the types of plants that adapt best to containerized gardening, including small trees, shrubs, bulbs, vegetables, and herbs. The article gives recommendations on selecting plants that flower during spring and into summer, and suggests ways to mix and match blooming plants in a container. Advice is also given on selecting a potting medium, watering, and fertilizing. This is the second in a series of three articles about wheelchair-accessible gardening.
