Today's Health: Cerebral Palsy

By Today,
Publication Date: December 3, 2009

Video features robotic therapy for children with cerebral palsy. The 6-minute Today Show segment shows an 11-year-old girl with cerebral palsy undergoing robotic training with the Lokomat treadmill trainer at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The training, which involves motor learning that is repetitious, intense, and task specific, is aimed at decreasing spasticity and increasing muscle tone. The footage shows the girl being able to walk, supported by a walker, following therapy. Medical professionals interviewed stress the importance of early intervention for children with cerebral palsy, as a child’s brain is more plastic than that of an adult. According to the experts, with robotic therapy, increased nerve-to-nerve and nerve-to-muscle connections can be achieved.
